Liverpool legend Steve Nicol has urged Liverpool to make a move for marquee forward Victor Osimhen as a possible replacement for Mohamed Salah whose long-term future as a player of the club is increasingly in doubt.
Ex-Nigeria international now director of football of the Saudi Pro League, Michael Emenalo attempted to bring the Egyptian to Saudi Arabia last summer but a deal did not happen as Liverpool did not want to part with arguably their most important player.
The 1994 World Cup star has close ties to Salah, having brokered the deal that took the African player to Chelsea during his tenure as sporting director of the Blues.
Osimhen is poised to end a four-year association with Napoli in the off season despite signing a contract extension before the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
As of now, it is believed that Liverpool are not involved in the sweepstakes for Osimhen, with Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea the two notable clubs battling it out for the 25-year-old.
The Nigerian has a release clause of 130 million euros which any interested club has to trigger before he is allowed to leave Napoli.
When asked to name the player Liverpool should sign other than Kylian Mbappe or Erling Haaland, without considering money, Nicol said: “Any player? The fact that Salah is going to be gone whether it’s this year or next year, Osimhen. I think Osimhen would be fantastic for Liverpool.”
PSG are believed to be frontrunners in the race to sign Osimhen because they have a good relationship with Napoli plus the fact that their Portuguese transfer guru Luís Campos used to work with Osimhen at his former club Lille.
