A 25-year-old man, Yakubu Mujitaba, has been stabbed to death in a recent street gang fight that occurred at Dandago Quarters, Kano metropolis, over a cash gift.
A witness said that the incident happened after the gang members returned from a political rally.
The witness, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said that some politicians gave the suspected thugs an undisclosed amount of money. It was alleged that a clash ensued in their camp while trying to share the money.
“They (the suspected thugs) had issues on how to share the money that was given to them at a political gathering on Sunday, October 24.
“Around 7pm that day, we saw a truck, loaded with armed youths, driving into our street. They were chanting violent words, calling the name of the deceased and his gang members, challenging them to a fight.
“Mujitaba and his friends came out and confronted them and it resulted into a gang fight. People ran into their houses for safety. The police arrived later to take control of the situation,” the source said.
The father of the deceased, Yakubu Abdullahi, who confirmed that his late son was killed during a street gang clash, said that the deceased had been interred in accordance to Islamic rites.
He alleged that his son was killed by members of a rival gang within the Kano metropolis.
“I returned home that evening to find the corpse of my son lying at my door step. I asked those around and I was informed that his friends brought his remains back home.
“His friends later told me that they had a quarrel with another gang from the other axis of the city, adding that during the fight, my son was stabbed to death,” the father of the deceased said.
When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, Kano State Police Command, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, confirmed the violent clash between the local rival gangs at Dandago Quarters resulting in the death of one person.
Kiyawa disclosed that a suspect was arrested in connection with the incident, stressing, “We received a distress call that there was violence at Dandago Quarters.
“A team of police personnel, led by Assistant Superintendent of Police, Bashir Gwadabe, was dispatched to the scene of the crime.
“The situation was brought under control. One Mujitaba Yakubu, who suffered grievous hurt, was rescued and taken to Muritala Muhammad Specialist Hospital, where he was confirmed dead.
“We have arrested one suspect, Nura Usman, a resident of Zango Quarters and investigation is still in progress.”
