After two days in coma, a 30-year-old commercial motorcyclist, Saheed Olabomi, shot by an anti-riot policeman in Osogbo, capital of Osun state, has been confirmed dead.

Saheed was shot along Old Oba road via Oke-Onitea junction on Tuesday while conveying a passenger named Tajudeen Olabosipo along the route. The incident led to massive protests in Osogbo as commercial motorcyclists mobilised and made bonfires at the popular Oke-Fia Junction in Osogbo.

Saheed had been in a state of coma since Tuesday evening, battling for his life with a life support machine at Osun State University Teaching Hospital, Osogbo.

Speaking with our correspondent on Friday, Saheed’s brother, Adewale Mojeed confirmed the death and added that his brother died around 8:15pm on Thursday.

Mojeed revealed how the deceased’s mother lost consciousness and was rushed to the hospital upon hearing of her son’s demise.

He said the family was not happy with the policeman who shot Saheed and that punishment should be meted out.

Mojeed said, “When Saheed’s mother heard about the demise of her son, her health deteriorated and she had to be taken to hospital.

“He died around 8:15pm yesterday. He was immediately taken to the morgue. The plan to bury him has not been concluded. The family is sad over the matter. The wife of Saheed and relatives have been crying since they heard the news. The family is angry with the police.

“He studied Business Administration in Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin. He had OND (Ordinary National Diploma).”

Meanwhile, the deceased’s family has demanded justice over the incident. Speaking, the deceased’s uncle, Tajudeen Olabomi, urged the government and the Police authority to ensure that the policeman was prosecuted publicly.

The Public Relations Officer of the Osun Police Command, Yemisi Opalola, disclosed that the Mobile policeman who accidentally shot the victim had been arrested and was undergoing orderly-room trial.
