Operatives of the Ogun State Police Command police have arrested a 25-year-old man, Wasiu Bankole, for allegedly raping a 70-year-old grandmother (name withheld).
The police arrested the suspect on Wednesday following a report by the victim at the Agbado Police Division.
The septuagenarian victim told the police that while she was asleep in her house at the Abule Lemode area of Ijoko on June 2 at about 8 pm, the suspect suddenly broke into her room, held her down and raped.
The victim added that one of her neighbours, who heard her screaming, rescued her by beating the suspect with a plank on his back.
She said that it was at this juncture that the suspect jumped off her and ran away naked, leaving his clothes, shoes and torchlight behind.
After the victim’s report to the police, the Divisional Police Officer, Agbado Division, Superintendent Kuranga Yero, deployed detectives to search for and arrest the suspect.
Confirming the incident, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, said the suspect was arrested 24 hours later.
Oyeyemi added that during interrogation the suspect confessed to committing the crime, but said he acted under the influence of alcohol.
The police spokesman also said that the victim had been taken to hospital for medical attention.
Meanwhile, the state Commissioner of Police, Kenneth Ebrimson, has ordered the immediate transfer of the suspect to the Anti-Human Trafficking and Child Labour Unit of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department for further investigation and prosecution.
