A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress and the National Chairman of the Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu Support Group, Yomi Odunowo, has commended President Bola Tinubu for his swift response to the issues raised by the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress, which successfully nipped in the bud their earlier planned strike actions over fuel subsidy removal.
Odunowo who made this known in a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media, Seyi Shodipo, noted that President Tinubu had through this effort demonstrated his commitment to resolving all identified problems arising from the fuel subsidy removal saga.
He applauded the President’s empathetic conviction about how subsidy was not just a scam that only benefited the rich, but also how the country was being robbed to indulge them.
It would be recalled that the trade union groups had planned to embark on a nationwide strike from last week Wednesday over the removal of fuel subsidy announced by President Tinubu while delivering his Inaugural speech.
The APC chieftain appreciated the President’s resolve to strongly make the organised Labour understand that fuel subsidy had not only been abused and converted into a cash cow by and for a few corrupt individuals, but was another conduit pipe for massive corruption.
Odunowo equally applauded President Tinubu for querying a system where the nation was borrowing insanely, irresponsibly and illegally to fund fuel subsidy, adding that it was simply diabolical to continue along that path.
He, however, explained that President Tinubu did not remove fuel subsidy as being erroneously misinterpreted as it had long been removed by an Act of the National Assembly, assuring that the Tinubu administration would apply what is expended on subsidy for the greater good of the greater number of Nigerians.
According to him, the reinstatement of subsidy could be likened to the President undermining his oath of office and breaking the law, more so that the National Assembly had done away with it via the Petroleum Industry Act.
The AATSG National Chairman, however, showered encomiums on President Tinubu for making significant strides and initiating measures that have captivated the nation’s attention and garnered widespread commendations in his first fourteen days in office, like his approval of the new Electricity Act to promote private sector investments in the Nigerian power sector, de-monopolize the nation’s electricity generation, transmission and distribution at the national level, as well as his assent to constitutional amendment bill on uniformity in retirement age of judicial officers to strengthen the judiciary, ensure the rule of law and empowering the judicial officers to execute their responsibilities effectively.
“President Tinubu’s early sterling performance has clearly demonstrated his commitment to effective governance and desire to bring positive changes to the lives of Nigerians,” Odunowo said.
