The Labour Party on Sunday evening applauded the public endorsement of its 2023 Presidential Candidate, Peter Obi by former president Olusegun Obasanjo, describing it as “a welcome development”.

The former president had earlier on Sunday released a letter to Nigerian and particularly, the youth in the country wherein he picked Obi ahead of All Progressives Congress candidates, Bola Tinubu and Peoples Democratic Party candidate, Atiku Abubakar.

Speaking to The Point correspondent, LP national chairman, Julius Abure said “It’s a welcome development that former president Olusegun Obasanjo endorsed my presidential candidate, Peter Obi. Obviously, every patriotic and right thinking person in Nigeria, every stakeholder ought to identity with Peter Obi at this time of our history and development.”

Abure described Obasanjo as “A patriot who worked in the military, served Nigeria with all his strength, with his life, and you know that Obasanjo is very passionate when it comes to the poor and downtrodden as well as about the growth and development of the country. Now endorsing Peter Obi is an indication that he’s truly a patriot.

“I’m not saying this because Peter Obi is my candidate but because he appears to be the best among the committee of presidential candidates. As it is today, it’s only Peter Obi that has the energy, capacity, health, and what it takes to change the political and economic narrative in Nigeria. It’s only Peter Obi that has the program, the seven point agenda that can turn the fortune of Nigeria, reposition it for effective service delivery to the people. Therefore, it’s a welcome development, we appreciate it and we know that Obasanjo is patriotic, and it’s a right step in the right direction.”

Abure then called on other former leaders not to shy away from doing the needful for the country

“I want to use this opportunity to call on other past presidents of the country to also do same, and throw their weight behind Peter Obi because there’s no gain saying the fact that we need to change the other two political parties that has held Nigeria captive over the years. I’ve always said that if you buy a product in the market, and the product is not giving you the results you need, all you need to do is to change that product.

“We have tried PDP, it didn’t work, in 2015, we had to change to APC, but APC was like frying pan to fire. So it is only fair at this time that we change that product, and the only product that’s available but we’ve not tried is the Labour Party and its presidential candidate. I want to urge all other past presidents of the country, and all right thinking Nigerians to do same and support us so that we can have a clear win,” he said.
