Nigerian President, Olusegun Obasanjo, has reportedly travelled to the neighbouring Republic of Benin in respect of the Yoruba Nation activist, Chief Sunday Adeyemo, a.k.a Sunday Igboho, who is currently facing trial for breaching the country’s law.
Recall that the activist had been declared wanted by the Department of State Services following a bloody raid by the security agent on his Soka, Ibadan residence on July 1.
It was learnt that Obasanjo travelled to Benin Republic to condole with former President Nicephore Soglo whose wife, Roseline, aged 87, died on July 25, in Cotonou.
Soglo was president of Benin Republic from 1991 to 1996.
A diplomatic source had confided in The Cable that “Former President Obasanjo travelled to Zanzibar on August 1. Perhaps, to conceal his trip; he rerouted to Benin Republic.
“He was to condole with former President Soglo who recently lost his wife.”
Another source was quoted as saying, “He also met with Patrice Talon. The purpose of the meeting was to seek soft-landing for Sunday Igboho.
“He’s asking the Beninese authorities to grant the separatist leader asylum, and not to return him to Nigeria.
“The former president intervened on the request of some South-West leaders.”
Sunday Igboho is being prosecuted at the Cour De’Appel De Cotonou in Benin Republic for possessing an illegal document.
Igboho was recently arrested at Cardinal Bernardin International Airport in Cotonou, while trying to travel to Germany.
