The Governor’s Advisory Council has denied sanctioning the replacement of Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu with the state Head of Service, Hakeem Muri-Okunola in the upcoming 2023 governorship election.
The news had gone viral on social media recently but the Secretary of the GAC, Mutiu Are debunked the news in a press statement issued on Saturday.
The GAC, the most powerful and highest political decision making organ in the state, in the release, stated that it is not within its realm to make such a replacement.
It added that the news was spread to cause disaffection among party members and leaders, noting that the GAC has not discussed the issue of a second term.
Describing the news as “absolutely false and preposterous,” the GAC noted that there was “no discussion of a second term ticket by the GAC.”
“Importantly, the Independent National Electoral Commission has not signalled the commencement of the process for governorship election in Lagos State.
“Governor Sanwo-olu was elected for a 4-year tenure which is still ongoing. The matter of replacement of the governor does not arise and is patently sub judice. Governor Sanwo-Olu is doing a wonderful job delivering infrastructure projects for Lagos and working daily on making the state better for all its residents,” the GAC explained further.
It therefore urged those behind the “dangerous, dysfunctional and misguided post to desist forthwith.”
