THE National Identity Management Commission has said Nigerians will pay N15,000 processing fee to effect a change on date of birth and N5,000 for National Identity Card renewal or replacement.
The fees, which became public, in the wake of the rush for National Identity Numbers by Nigerians trying to beat the deadline given to telecommunications operators to block subscribers whose NINs are not linked to their SIMs, are modification fees, according to the Commission.
There are varying charges for correction of other details such as name and address.
NIMC Regional Coordinator, Funmi Opesanwo, disclosed this on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily programme on Wednesday.
“The money we charge is for modification fee,..For the date of birth correction, the processing fee is N15,000. For card renewal or card replacement, there is processing fee of N5,000. For a modification of your name and address, there is a fee of N500. People misconstrue this to mean that, in NIMC, they are asking them to pay money. No, those are for services,” Opesanwo said.
“They are payable to the Treasury Single Account (TSA) and not anybody,” she added.
Opesanwo was reacting to allegations that officials of the commission were demanding illegal fees from Nigerians to link their NIN to their SIM cards.
The Nigeria Communications Commission had in December 2020 given a two-week ultimatum to service providers to block phone numbers without NIN.
The ultimatum was later extended by six weeks, THE POINT reports.
