The Transmission Company of Nigeria has confirmed a loss of 165 megawatts of electricity following the collapse of a transmission tower on the Ikeja-West/Osogbo 330kV line.

The incident, which occurred at about 9:22 pm on Wednesday, April 2, 2025, was triggered by a combination of severe windy rainfall and a trailer truck accident that resulted in the collapse of Tower 528.

In a statement released in Abuja on Friday, TCN’s Public Affairs Manager, Ndidi Mbah, revealed that the fault occurred approximately 14.9 kilometers from the Ikeja-West Transmission Substation.

“Investigations revealed that Tower 528 collapsed after a trailer truck struck detached conductors on Tower 527, leading to extensive structural damage,” the statement noted.

Additional transmission structures, Towers 526 and 524, were also impacted by the accident.

THE POINT reports that the affected 330kV transmission line is a vital high-voltage infrastructure that connects four southwestern states: Lagos (Ikeja-West Substation), Ogun (a transit route), Oyo (part of the corridor), and Osun (Osogbo Substation).

Ikeja Electric (IE), Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC), and Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) are the three main electricity distribution companies (DISCOs) in the area that have been impacted by the power outage.

TCN confirmed that restoration activities are in progress to address the disruption.

In order to repair the damaged towers and restore the line’s full transmission capability, engineers have already been sent to the location.

The company also stated that, in the meantime, the lost 165MW has been rerouted through alternative transmission lines to maintain electricity supply to the affected DISCOs.

Despite challenges such as weather-related damages and vandalism, TCN reassured Nigerians of its commitment to delivering a reliable and efficient electricity transmission network nationwide.
