The Nigerian Communications Commission and the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission have formalized a strategic partnership aimed at bolstering consumer protection and fostering fair competition in Nigeria’s telecommunications sector.

Speaking at the signing ceremony of the Memorandum of Understanding in Abuja, NCC Vice Chairman, Aminu Maida, described the event as a significant milestone for both institutions.

“Today, we celebrate the commencement of a strategic partnership between two important regulatory bodies committed to promoting the welfare of Nigerians through fair competition and a robust consumer protection framework,” he said.

Maida emphasised the growing need of collaboration in an era marked by rapid technological innovation.

“The telecoms industry has become the backbone of Nigeria’s economic and social development. This necessitates that we provide a level playing field for all players while protecting consumers who rely on dependable and inexpensive communications services,” he stated.

The MoU, according to Maida, reflects the shared vision of both agencies to align their efforts for maximum impact while supporting the Federal Government’s Ease of Doing Business initiative.

“By aligning our efforts, the NCC and FCCPC aim to avoid regulatory uncertainty and create clarity for the benefit of all stakeholders in the communications sector,” he added.

Maida praised the FCCPC leadership for its dedication to consumer protection and healthy competition, adding that the cooperation represented a unified front in addressing issues such as market abuses, violations of consumer rights, and the intricacies of the digital economy.

He also praised the personnel from both organisations for their efforts in bringing the collaboration to fruition. “Your diligence has laid the groundwork for a collaboration that will not only address present challenges but also anticipate the needs of tomorrow,” according to him.

Calling on stakeholders to embrace the collaborative spirit of the partnership, Maida concluded, “Together, we can achieve the goals of innovation, inclusivity, and sustainability in Nigeria’s telecommunications sector and beyond.”

The MoU signing marks a historic step in enhancing regulatory synergy and ensuring that consumers and businesses benefit from a transparent and competitive telecommunications industry.
