In a renewed offensive against the menace of drug counterfeiters, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control has destroyed fake drugs worth over N15 million in Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State.

The Director-General of NAFDAC, Dr. Paul Orhii, represented by the Federal Capital Territory coordinator of the agency, Mr. Abdulsallami Ozigis, while carrying out the destruction exercise in company with community leaders and security agencies, said the exercise had become necessary to prevent the offensive products from making a re-entry into the market and to raise public awareness on the dangers of counterfeit products.

“The essence of destruction is to invariably prevent the seized products from finding their way back to the market. This will eliminate the dangers associated with the consumption of the spurious products to the consuming society,” he said.

Speaking further, Ozigis said eliminating the undesired, regulated products from circulation would assist the medical practitioners and other stakeholders to render quality service to Nigerians and guarantee public safety.

Earlier, Kebbi State Coordinator of NAFDAC, Mr. Garba Abubakar, said the products were recovered from patent medicine stores, hawkers, supermarkets and other outlets across the state. He observed that items destroyed included banned products like tramadol, prescription drugs like codeine containing cough syrups, various ranges of unregistered products, medical devices, cosmetics, chemicals and food products.
