The police in Osun State have dragged three women before an Osogbo Magistrate’s court for allegedly assaulting a Police corporal, Lateef Sanni, who had attempted to arrest them for allegedly assaulting one Adetiba Ololade.
The accused persons included a woman, Mrs. Olateju Theresa, her daughter, Olateju Emaculate, 19, and one Adebayo Damilola, aged 21.
Police prosecutor, Inspector Fagboyinbo Abiodun, informed the court that the accused persons and others, now at large, conspired and assaulted one Adetiba Ololade by beating her up on August 15, 2016 for allegedly failing to secure admission for Emaculate and Damilola.
It was gathered that Ololade had promised to assist the two ladies to secure admission into a higher institution but failed to make good his pledge.
Emaculate and her mother had requested that Ololade should refund the money paid her but she refused. As a result of this, a fight ensued between them.
According to the prosecutor, after allegedly beating Ololade, the victim reported her ordeal to policemen at Dada Estate Police station before Corporal Sanni and his colleague visited Olaoluwa Estate in Osogbo, to arrest the accused.
The police prosecutor told the court that while trying to arrest the suspects, Corporal Sanmi was attacked and seriously beaten up by Theresa, Emmaculate and one other person. Abiodun noted that the accused pounced on the policeman, bit him and tore his police uniform.
The charge sheet obtained by our correspondent reads, “That you, Olateju Emaculate, Adebayo Damilola and Olateju Theresa and others at large, on August 15, 2016 at about 6:00am at Olaoluwa Estate, Osogbo did seriously assault one Cpl Lateef Sanni by giving him a human bite and tore his cloth when he was performing his normal duty.”
He said the offences contravened Sections 516, 31 and 356(2) of the Criminal Code, Cap 34, Volume II, Laws of Osun State of Nigeria, 2003. The accused persons pleaded not guilty to the three-count charge bearing on conspiracy and assault.
Their counsel, Dada Adeyinka, made oral application for their bail while assuring the court that they had reliable sureties to stand for them.
The presiding Magistrate, Olubukola Olowolagba, granted the accused bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties each in like sum.
Olowolagba ordered that one of the sureties should provide tax clearance certificate while the addresses of the sureties must be verified by the prosecutor.
The case was adjourned to October 6, 2016 for hearing.
