A student of the Lagos State Senior Model College, Igbokuta, Master Durojaiye Oluwasegun Ayomide, has emerged the winner of the state final of the annual Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation- sponsored National Quiz Competition.
With his victory, he will be representing Lagos State at the Zonal Final scheduled for September 22, 2017 in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State.
Durojaiye scored 84 per cent to beat other contestants to clinch the first position leaving Dara Ogunmola of New Hall International School, Lekki (a private school), and Uwosu Olumide of the Lagos State Senior Model College, Kankon, Badagry, who scored 82.5 and 81 per cent to second and third positions, respectively, in the keenly contested competition.
His victory at this level of the competition will fetch him a scholarship award worth N100,000 from the NNPC.
The NNPC National Quiz Competition is organised annually in collaboration with all the state ministries of education in Nigeria to promote the teaching and learning of sciences in schools and also to stimulate students’ interest in science subjects.
Congratulating the winners at the end of the event, the Acting Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Mrs. Omobola Babs-Akinyeye, noted that students from Lagos State Government-owned schools had been participating and recording successes in the competition since inception in 2001.
“The competition has laid solid foundation for science development in Nigeria and one encouraging trend observed was that the quality of performance of the schools had been on the increase since the competition began,” Babs-Akinyeye said.
She urged the winner to study harder to win at the zonal and national levels of the competition.
Speaking earlier, the Director of Science and Technology, Ministry of Education, explained that this year’s edition of the competition started on July 15, 2017 at the grassroots level in 10 centers across the state, where the students were subjected to written examinations in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics and English Language.
He added that the 60 best students were selected, with 3 per Local government, to participate at the state finals, which took place on July 24, 2017 at the Agidingbi Senior Grammar School, Ikeja.
The students who were full of praises for their teachers and promised not to relent on their efforts to bring glory to Lagos State and the nation in the area of scientific discoveries and technological inventions.
