A medical doctor with Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital, Nnewi, Anambra State, Collinus Onuigbo, has reportedly been kidnapped.

It was gathered that Onuigbo, who is a neurologist, was kidnapped on Tuesday night in front of his house while returning from work.

Although details of his abduction are still sketchy, security sources disclosed on Wednesday that a manhunt had been launched to rescue him.

According to one of the sources, a crack team of security personnel selected from the police, Department of State Services, and members of the newly established Anambra State security outfit, code-named ‘Agunechemba’ Operation Udo Ga-Achi, has been put together to rescue him.

One of Onuigbo’s friends who gave his name as Unuoma confirmed the abduction.

He said, “Yes, my friend Dr Onuigbo was kidnapped last night while he was trying to open his gate. He was returning from duty at the hospital when the incident happened.

“Doctors in the hospital are currently having a meeting and they are going to issue an official statement concerning the abduction. The kidnapping of medical doctors in Nigeria is becoming something else.”

“The worst situation is that when a doctor is kidnapped, the Nigerian Medical Association will mandate every member to contribute money for ransom payment,” he said, calling on the government to do something urgently to reverse the trend.

Meanwhile, efforts made by SaharaReporters to speak with Anambra State Branch Chairman, Nigerian Medical Association, Prince Okam, were unsuccessful as he was said to be presiding over a meeting concerning the kidnapping incident at the time of filing this report.
