A 40-year-old man has landed in police net for allegedly raping an 11-year-old girl.
Our correspondent gathered that the suspect, Rasheed Wasiu, after he had carnal knowledge of the girl, further threatened to kill her if she informed her parents.
Wasiu allegedly committed the crime around 10:00 pm, when he accosted the victim (names withheld) and dragged her to the bathroom, where he allegedly raped her.
Both Wasiu and the victim’s parents are co-tenants at No. 12 Mustapha Street, Ajeromi Ifelodun area of Lagos State.
It was learnt that Wasiu, a father-of-four, had before the alleged rape, been making advances to the girl.
He was reported to have earlier perpetrated the same act against a 16-year-old girl at his residence.
Our correspondent learnt that the suspect, after allegedly raping the girl, offered her N200 so that she would not expose him.
It was gathered that Wasiu had earlier attempted to rape the girl, when she was at his apartment to watch television.
The suspect, it was gathered, inserted his hand in the girl’s private part while she was in his apartment.
When she reported the incident to her parents, they did not confront the suspect and also did not report him to the appropriate authorities.
However, following the rape, the victim went to report the assault by herself at Tolu Police Station, Ajeromi, without informing her parents.
Our correspondent gathered that when the police from the division came to arrest the suspect, the residents were caught by surprise as none of the neighbours was aware of the incident.
The victim’s father (names withheld) told our correspondent, “Wasiu has raped my daughter. He even went as far as threatening to kill her if she told anyone. From what I gathered, it is his habit to be sleeping with women all around. I can’t imagine he could do this to my daughter.
“Before now, I had told my daughter not to enter his apartment again; that any time she goes there I will flog her. Even her mother, I warned her not to allow my daughters go there.”
Recalling how the suspect lured the 11-year-old girl, her father said, “He (Wasiu) asked my daughter to come and watch film in his apartment and while she was there watching films, he started putting his hand inside her private part.
“My daughter ran outside and rushed into our apartment to report the matter to my wife, because I was not around. When I came back, she told me what happened. I wanted to confront him, but my wife said I shouldn’t, otherwise we would land ourselves in trouble. I was not comfortable with her view, but I warned my daughter not to go to his apartment again, and I instructed her mother to ensure that, because I always travel.
“When the incident now occurred, it was our daughter that went to report at the police station herself.”
Also speaking a neighbour, who did not want her name mentioned, said, “That man is wayward. He is always going after small girls. That is how he has been sleeping regularly with a 16-year-old girl in this area. I don’t want to mention her name. He must go to jail.”
When asked why she didn’t inform relevant authorities when she knew the suspect was having carnal knowledge of the 16-year-old, she said, “Well, it’s because it was not really my business. And since the girl in question, too, likes it, so what do I do to stop him?”
Meanwhile, our correspondent authoritatively gathered that while the test carried out on the victim at the Ajeromi General Hospital, Ajegunle, by Dr. C. Ochiedike, suggested that there was no sexual assault on the girl, the health facility at LASUTH, Mirabel Centre, confirmed there was forceful penetration.
Accor ding to the victim’s father, who paid N8,000 for the test at the general hospital, the result showed that his daughter was not raped, as there were no bruises.
“The test conducted at the General Hospital by Dr. C. Ochiedike claimed there was no penetration. But Mirabel’s result of the test confirmed she was raped. I have the test result of the General Hospital, which I can show you,” he said.
In a recorded interrogation with the victim by social worker and Coordinator, Oshodi-Ejigbo Child Protection Network, Mr Ebenezer Omajelile, and made available to our correspondent, the young girl said, “The man has been trying to do it with me since. He raped me.”
The suspect has been detained at the Kirikiri Maximum
Prison.
When contacted, the Lagos Police Public Relations Officer, Chike Oti, confirmed the case, adding that the suspect would be charged to court.
“The case has been reported at the Command. The suspect will be charged to court for prosecution,” he said.
