Nigeria Professional Football League’s all-time highest goal scorer, Mfon Udoh, emerged Enyimba’s hero in last weekend’s CAF Champions League preliminary round’s reverse-leg clash against Uganda’s Vipers, with a brace in the 2-0 home win in Port Harcourt. In this interview with Uchenna ajah, petit Mfon opens up on how his parents almost discouraged him from playing football. He also found time to speak on other football and personal issues. Excerpts:
What is the secret behind your superlative performance so far?
Honestly, the only secrets I know are hard work, commitment, sacrifice and prayers.
You were on the verge of leaving Enyimba after your goal rush during the 2013/14 campaign. What informed your decision to stay back in the club?
There were so many factors that made me not to leave Enyimba. However, the key factor was largely the negotiations between Enyimba and the teams that were interested in my service.
The two goals you scored against Vipers were very important because they also ensured that Enyimba would be playing in the next round of the CAF Champions League. Who are you dedicating your goals to and what are your targets for the current campaign?
I’m dedicating my goals to God Almighty-for the grace He gave to me. When God has not written you off, then no man can. I return all the glory to Him and to my teammates for their great support, and to my fans all over the world for keeping the faith flying.
So what are your targets this time?
My target this season is to help my team win as many matches as possible.
Is there no goals’ target for the season?
No, I will not be setting any goals target this season.
