The Lagos State Government is set to receive six new train sets, which are expected to significantly enhance the capacity of the Lagos Rail Mass Transit Blue and Red Lines.
The Head, Corporate Communication, Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority, Rev. Kolawole Ojelabi, disclosed this in a statement on Thursday.
Ojelabi said that the new trains, which have successfully passed the factory acceptance test, are scheduled for shipment from China.
“Six additional train sets will arrive in Lagos very soon to strengthen the capacity of the Lagos Rail Mass Transit (LRMT) Blue and Red Lines, delivering value to commuters and increasing the economic viability of the state,” he said.
He further explained that once the trains are delivered, they will be used to increase the frequency of trips along the Blue Line.
Ojelabi added that these trains will also play a crucial role in passenger operations once phase two of the Blue Line is completed.
“This phase, which will extend the service from Mile 2 to Okokomaiko over a 14-kilometre stretch, is expected to be completed by the first quarter of 2027,” Ojelabi explained.
While highlighting the positive impact on the state’s transportation system and economic growth, Ojelabi said, “The six trains will play a pivotal role in easing commuter pressure and improving the overall experience for Lagos residents.”
The completion of infrastructure for the first phase of the Blue Line, a 13-kilometre rail route from Marina to Mile 2, was launched by former President Muhammadu Buhari on January 23, 2023 and passenger operation opened on September 4, 2023 by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
The Blue Line currently runs 72 trips per day and with the procurement of three additional rolling stock, the trips are expected to increase.
