It was late Mandiba, Nelson Mandela, who once said “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” Aristotle also said, “All men by nature desire knowledge.”
These informed the decision of the Lagos State House of Assembly Committee on Education, under the chairmanship of Hon Olanrewaju Ogunyemi, in collaboration with the Deputy Governor’s Office, the Ministries of Education and Economic Planning and Budget, education districts and the state Universal Basic Education Board, to organise a workshop on effective and result oriented supervision of schools in the Centre of Excellence.
Hon Ogunyemi said, “Apart from appropriation of funds, the House of Assembly has the duty of oversight to ensure that funds appropriated are judiciously expended while the expected outcomes or laid down objectives are attained.”
He explained that the Lagos House of Assembly had embarked on oversight function to some schools in Lagos for on the spot insight and appreciation of what was happening in schools.
Revealing that Lagos needs more teachers’ furniture, laboratories and ICT equipment for schools, the House Committee on Education chairman added that the committee found out that more classrooms were needed to address over population in class rooms.
He revealed that living and learning environments, number of teachers and students had positively and negatively impacted on learning, adding that his committee discovered that there was a need to improve the lapses found in the schools.
