The Kwara State chapter of the ruling All Progressives Congress has said that the tenure of local government council chairmen in the state has yet to expire.
The state Publicity Secretary of the APC, Alhaji Sulyman Buhari, said contrary to speculation and insinuations in some quarters, the incumbent council chairmen in the state had yet to serve out their tenure.
Buhari, therefore, cautioned people, especially from the opposition parties, against negative comments on the decision of the state government on the forthcoming local government election.
According to him, the local government helmsmen remained in control of the councils because only the state government had the right to determine what to do on the matter when their tenure expired.
He added that the opposition parties were only looking for excuses, having sensed imminent defeat during the council poll. Speaking further, Buhari berated those calling for the dissolution of the Kwara State Independent Electoral Commission.
The Kwara APC spokesman described the critics of the government as not being sincere, saying the commission was established by law to perform certain duties for a specified period of time.
“As far as I’m concerned, I don’t know who is coming next on the agenda of government as regards the succession of the council bosses. But whatever it is, the party is always on ground. There is no doubt about that and it is equally acting in cognizance of the law.
“The opposition are only afraid of facing the ruling party, because till now they are nowhere to be found in the state. They can only utter baseless allegations,” Buhari said.
