Kunle, overshadowed me? No way! -Gabriel Afolayan

Gabriel Afolayan has rubbished the notion that his filmmaker brother, Kunle Afolayan, has taken the shine off him.

Among the three sons of the late legendary filmmaker, Adeyemi Afolayan, popularly known as Ade Love, Kunle is better known in the entertainment industry.

But, Gabriel, a theatre arts graduate from the University of Ibadan, while having a chat with The Point, insisted that they had different paths in life.

He stated, “My brother is an entity and I am an entity as well, though we are all working towards the same thing. You should not forget that we are brothers; he is doing his own and I am doing mine. For that, you cannot say his shadow has covered mine. I am on my own path; what he does cannot cover mine. We have shot a movie together; it would be out very soon.”

Speaking about the remembrance ceremony recently held in honour of their father, Gabriel opined that it was the right thing to do, especially to enlighten the younger ones who did not know him.

“It was an awesome thing for us to do that, because it was like a re-awakening to most people, especially the younger generations, who have little or no clue about who our father was and his contribution to entertainment.

We wanted to reintroduce him to the entertainment world and we were able to do that,” he said. He added that none of them was trying to be like their father, saying, “My father came to the world and he did his own thing, we are here doing our own thing as well.” For him, acting and doing music at the same time takes the grace of God.

He would not brag that he has the right formula of making things to work out well. And he also has no plans to leave music for acting and vice versa. He explained further, “God gave me the talents and I am really grateful for being able to multi-task.

There is no point dropping one for another, because I know my stand and I know what I am trying to achieve with both areas of entertainment. I know my music is my music and I can do it anytime, and I can act anytime too. I do not hope to drop one for another; I will do both separately.

“I like acting and singing, because they are two sides of a coin. If you are writing songs, you are also telling stories. If you are in a video, you are acting those stories you have gone to the studio to put on record. So, it is almost the same.”
