The Kano State House of Assembly has adopted a motion to recall the Kano State Emirate Councils Amendment Bill.
This was sequel to deliberations on the floor of the House during a plenary session presided over by the Speaker, Isma’il Falgore, on Tuesday.
In a motion of urgent public importance moved by the Majority Leader, Lawan Dala, he urged the House to support the motion to move the state forward.
The motion of urgent public importance was seconded by the member representing Dawakin Tofa, Shu’aibu Rabi’u.
The Assembly had in 2019 during the administration of the immediate-past governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, approved the creation of four additional emirate councils, bringing the number of first-class Emirs in the state to five.
Similarly , in September 2020 the House passed the Emirates Councils amendment bill 2020 which made provisions for the Emir of Kano to serve as the Chairman of the Council of Chiefs, putting the issue of rotation to an end.
However, former governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, who is the leader of the current ruling party in Kano State, the New Nigeria People’s Party, had vowed that the state would revisit the emirate law.
In February, a group, Yan Dangwalen Jihar Kano (the Kano Electorate), had written to the Assembly, seeking the review of the law establishing four additional emirates in Gaya, Rano, Karaye, and Bichi by Ganduje.
The group also called for the reinstatement of the former Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II.
The requests were contained in a letter signed by the chairman of the group, Najib Salati, dated February 5, 2024, and addressed to the Speaker of Kano State House of Assembly.
In the letter, also copied to the Kano State Governor, Kano State Deputy Governor and Secretary to the State Government, the group said, “The dissolution of the emirates and reinstatement of Sanusi as the Emir of Kano will foster unity, peace, and stability within Kano State and its neighbouring communities.
“We write to plead and also draw the attention of the honorable members to the law that governs the additional emirs in Kano State. Specifically, we would like to request a review and potential dissolution of the additional emirs and section that led to the creation of the four additional emirates.
“It is our firm belief that consolidating the emirates into a single entity will lead to greater unity and progress for the people of Kano. This consolidation may serve to streamline governance and promote a more cohesive community for the betterment of all citizens.
“We acknowledge the rightful authority of the Kano State House of Assembly in the issue of emirate management. However, we humbly request your esteemed Assembly to revisit and reconsider the decision to remove HRH Sanusi Lamido Sanusi from his throne. Our belief is based on the belief that his reinstatement will foster unity, peace, and stability within Kano State and its neighbouring communities.”
