JANET Jackson was reduced to tears when one of her iconic albums returned to the top of the charts decades after its original release.
The 54-year-old music legend was overwhelmed with gratitude and emotion when her 1986 album, Control, hit the top of a US chart last week.
Fans had bought the album to help the music star celebrate the fact it had been 35 years since it was first released.
And the reward proved to be overwhelmingly sweet for Ms Jackson as she saw the album – which includes hit singles What Have You Done For Me Lately, Nasty and Control – reach number 1 again.
Taking to social media on Saturday, Janet gushed to her fans over the unexpected album success.
She said: “I was at home just the other day by myself and I began to cry.
“I was crying because I was so thankful for all that God has blessed me with, all that he has given me and I’m so thankful for him being in my life, and I’m so thankful for all of you being in my life.”
She continued: “You’re so special to me and I want to thank all of you for making Control number 1 once again after 35 years.
“I never, never in a million years, I would never think that this would happen. I really appreciate you and I love you so, so much. Thank you.”
The album hit number 1 on the Apple Top 40 US Pop Album Chart last week – and was still riding high on the list this weekend.
The album originally topped the Billboard 200 when it was originally released and broke a record for having the longest continuous run on the Hot 100 with singles from one album, a record 65 consecutive weeks.
This past week, Janet received a public apology from Justin Timberlake who appeared to wish to right wrongs of the past.
Justin and Janet famously performed at the 2004 Super Bowl – during the performance the N*Sync star tore open the music legend’s top, exposing her breast.
The incident provoked controversy at the time – and many feel Jackson’s career has never recovered following a backlash over the performance.
Addressing the incident in an apology which Justin penned in response to a documentary about former girlfriend Britney Spears, the Cry Me A River singer wrote: “[In a system that] sets men, especially white men, up for success… I understand that I fell short in these moments and in many others and benefited from a system that condones misogyny and racism.
“I specifically want to apologize to Britney Spears and Janet Jackson both individually, because I care for and respect these women and I know I failed.”
