Being well known as a student comes with advantages and disadvantages. While one enjoys a lot of privileges, losing focus and stepping on toes is almost impossible.
While narrating his experience as a student of the University of Lagos, Oludemilade Alejo, aka Ycee, said that it was not easy to relate with people in school in such a way that they would not pick offence.
He has, however, put his admission on hold, insisting that “it didn’t really make sense not being able to attend lectures and prepare well for examinations.”
According to the musician, while in school, he tried to behave like any other student and made people around him realise that he had not changed a bit. He was studying Marine Biology.
“I told them that I was the same person they used to know because one must be careful not to give a negative impression. People can easily conc l u d e t h a t I am being snob- bish or pompous because I am a celebrity.”
After hitting the limelight with his song, ‘Jagaban,’ Ycee has proven that he did not make the song by coincidence. He has released other songs that people relate with very well and has done collaborations with other artistes.
According to him, though his team knew ‘Jagaban’ was a good song, they did not know it would be widely accepted. The success of the song went beyond their expectation.
“I started doing music at 16. I put out my first official single in 2012, titled, ‘Smile On Me’ and it was produced by J-Sleek. We did a video for it. But before then, I had done a mix tape. It was when my boss heard the mix tape that he decided to sign me. I am signed on to Tinny Entertainment and I have been with them for a while.
“I call myself a rapper that can relate with different beats. I am not limiting myself to just hip-hop; I do afro-pop, reggae and other genres of music. I am a versatile rapper,” he stated.
