Some students of the Shehu Shagari College of Education in Wamako on Thursday, stoned and burnt to death a Christian female student who was their classmate.
In an attempt to protect what they claim to be the honour of the Islamic religion, the irate students killed their fellow colleague, identified as Deborah, after she was alleged to have committed blasphemy against Prophet Mohammed on campus.
A viral video that circulated online showed how she was set ablaze, and a student of the institution who spoke to an online news outlet, said following immediate threats to her safety, she was immediately evacuated to the security post of the school. The mob however, pursued her to the security post and overpowered the personnel there.
The news outlet reached out to the Sokoto police spokesman, Sanusi Abubakar, who declined comments about the incident.
However, the Sultanate Council, Sokoto, in a statement signed by its Secretary, Sa’idu Muhammadu Maccido, condemned the incident.
The statement reads, “The Sultanate Council has learnt with dismay the unfortunate happenings at the Shehu Shagari College of Education (SSCOE), Sokoto, that led to the loss of life of a female student of the institution.
“The Sultanate Council has urged all to remain calm and ensure peaceful co-existence among all people of the State and nation,” it added.
