The Governor of Niger State, Umar Bago, has announced a ban on the operation of commercial motorcycles, popularly known as Okada and tricycles (Kekenapep) in Minna from 6pm to 6am daily.

The governor made the announcement on Tuesday amid rising concerns over insecurity and violent gang activities in the state capital.

“No Okada, no Kekenapep from 6am in the evening to 6pm in the morning,” Bago said.

He added, “Anybody found, unless there is medical attention or any other issue, no Okada movement from 6pm to 6am in Minna for now.”

The decision follows several reports of killings and thuggery in Minna.

Although Governor Bago did not reference these reports directly, his new directive comes as security concerns continue to grow in the capital city.

The ban takes immediate effect.

Describing the new restriction as a temporary measure, Governor Bago said it was necessary to address the growing threat to public safety.

He also warned District, Village, and Ward Heads to ensure proper documentation of individuals residing in their communities.

“Any house found to be harbouring criminals will be demolished while buildings where hard drugs are sold will as well be destroyed,” he said.

The governor further instructed security agencies to intensify efforts in identifying and dismantling criminal hideouts and networks within the city.

He cautioned parents to monitor their children closely, stating that anyone caught engaging in violence will be arrested and prosecuted with the full weight of the law.

Governor Bago reiterated that the protection of lives and property remains the fundamental responsibility of any government and called on all stakeholders to join hands in combating insecurity across the state.
