An Igbo pressure group, Ndigbo Unity Forum, has decried the poor state of infrastructure and services at the Alex Ekwueme Federal University Teaching Hospital, Abakiliki, Ebonyi State.
The group noted that patients usually lie on bare floor during emergencies due to inadequacy of bed space at the hospital wards.
The Publicity Secretary of the group, Unah Zachius, said that most of the air conditioners at the hospital were dysfunctional.
“The toilets in some of the wards, especially the orthopaedic section, are not functioning. Some of the workers have negative attitude towards the patients especially in the emergency wards of the hospital.”
The NUF, therefore, tasked the management and staff of the teaching hospital to be alive to their responsibilities in the interest of the citizens while also urging both the federal and state governments to inject more funds for infrastructural development of the hospital.
However, the Public Relations Officer of the hospital, Uzor Oji, has described the allegations as untrue, saying, “AEFUTHA has standard number of bed spaces.
“We can only talk about improvising when there are many casualties at the hospital; we cannot turn them back. ”
