An unlicensed mini-bus driver has crushed a commercial motorcycle rider in Orile, along the Lagos – Badagry Expressway, Lagos State.

The bus driver identified as Ismaila Aremu, was said to be moving towards Orile, when the rider, who was alleged to be driving against traffic, had a head-on collision with the vehicle.

According to an eyewitness, who identified himself as Lucky Edobor, the rider died on the spot while his motorcycle was badly
damaged.

Edobor said blood gushed out from different parts of the body of the rider.

He said, “It was a horrible sight. People, including the driver and his passengers and passersby, wailed on seeing the lifeless body of the victim. People passed information to the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Orile Police Station, CSP Ogundele, who led a team of policemen to the scene and effected the arrest of the driver.

“The driver was crying, blaming it on the devil. I have never seen accident happen in my presence before. That was my first time. Within a twinkle of an eye, the rider dropped dead. I hate using motorcycle, no matter how much in a hurry I am. The rider was over speeding and could not control the motorcycle when the vehicle got closer to him. He was all alone on the motorcycle when the accident occurred.”

At the Orile Police Station, a police sergeant, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said, “The driver is a stupid man. How could he be driving a shuttle bus for a very long time in Lagos without a drivers’ license? If the driver had a license, the police would be looking at the area that the rider was moving against traffic, which is against traffic the law. Now, he is in trouble. He was charged for manslaughter in one of the magistrates’ courts in Lagos. The magistrate put his bail condition at N500, 000 with two sureties, who must be gainfully employed and with tax clearance. Where will the relations get such amount of money from at this time when people are hungry? Who will bring out the money? I’m not sure the driver has half of such money in his account because he is not even the owner of the vehicle. He was remanded in Ikoyi prison.”

Another sergeant attached to the station, disclosed that the police took the dead rider’s corpse to a mortuary, adding, “His family came and wanted to settle. They said the driver or his family should bring money so that they could give the dead man a befitting burial. How much can the family of the driver bring? Even if they spent money in burying the rider, where will they get N500, 000 to bail the driver who has no drivers’ license?”
