There was pandemonium in the Africa area of Osogbo, the capital of Osun State recently, after two male apprentice plumbers tripped, fell and died inside a well filled with water while installing a pumping machine.
The incident occurred at a car wash centre, where the deceased persons, simply identified as Bode and Kunle, had attempted to fix a pumping machine inside a deep well.
The deceased apprentices were said to be aged between 25 and 26.
An eyewitness, who pleaded anonymity, disclosed that Bode and Kunle had, on November 8, 2017, gone with their master to the car wash centre to assist him in carrying out the repairs on the pumping machine, but ended up meeting their untimely death.
According to the eyewitness, one of the two victims, Bode, was in the process of installing the pumping machine inside the well at the new car wash business centre, when he suddenly lost his balance and fell into the well.
Shocked by the occurrence, the other apprentice, Kunle, immediately made efforts to rescue him, but he was not lucky as he also slipped and fell inside the well during the process of descending inside the well.
The incident attracted hundreds of residents of the area, who started crying and shedding tears as they called for assistance.
The eyewitness said, “The two men (Bode and Kunle) came with their master to install a pumping machine for a car washer and in the process of installing it, one of them suddenly lost balance and fell inside the water-filled well. The second man, who was holding the rope that held the pumping machine, made efforts to descend into the well and rescue his colleague from drowning, but he also slipped and fell inside the
well.
“Unfortunately, both of them did not come out alive from the well as all efforts to get them out proved futile. It was a few minutes later that some sympathisers fetched one well digger, who made futile efforts at descending into the well. To the surprise of many residents of the area, the well digger quickly rushed out of the well, saying he could not cope with the heat inside.
