When 42-year-old Ehiabhi Edo left Nigeria many years ago in search of a greener pasture in Europe, little did he know that he would never return to his homeland, dead or alive.
On May 3, this year, Edo went to bed at night, but he never woke up the next morning, leaving behind his loved ones and all the dreams of making more money and creating a better life for himself, his family in Europe and back home in Amedokhian, Uromi, in the Esan North East Local Government Area of Edo State.
Although the cause of his death still remains a puzzle to his family members and friends, both at home and abroad, some of his close friends, who spoke on the telephone from Torino, Italy, revealed that the late Edo died in his sleep without suffering from any previous ailment.
They disclosed that the father of two had kids from two different ladies.
According to them, while he lived with one of the ladies in Italy, he maintained another home with another woman and a child in Germany.
One of Edo’s friends in Italy, who simply identified himself as Uyi, disclosed that he had earlier battled to save the life of one of his children, who was involved in an auto crash, a few months before his sudden death.
He said, “Less than two months ago, a car hit one of his kids living with him in Torino Italy. The kid was in a coma for a few weeks and just regained consciousness a few days before Edo died in his sleep. His kid was still in the hospital and the mother only came home that fateful night, after spending some few days with her child at the hospital.
“She woke up in the morning, got dressed and tried to wake her husband up so they could go back to the hospital together to see their son. But Edo had become cold and lifeless! That was when she shouted for help.”
Another friend of the victim, who pleaded anonymity, said that Edo’s Germany-based wife was in Torino, Italy, the night he died.
He said, “The other woman based in Germany with the other kid was at the time of his death in town, the city of Torino, Italy, to see him. She was lodged in a hotel for a day or two; she was supposed to have traveled back to Germany that same morning Edo did not wake up from his sleep.
“Edo had actually promised her that he would call a cab that morning to take her and the kid to the airport. After waiting for the cab for a long time, and they were not forthcoming, she started calling Edo’s` line, but got no response.
“After a while, someone picked up the call and started pleading with the woman to go back to Germany; that something urgent just came up and Edo had to attend to it. So, the woman and her kid left for Germany. But as she arrived in Germany, she started calling again to know what had made it impossible for Edo to see her or even pick her calls. That was when she was told that the father of her child had died.”
Another of Edo’s friends in Italy, who also preferred not to be identified, explained that the two women in Germany and Italy were aware of each other`s relationship with the victim.
He, however, said he was not sure if the one in Italy was aware of the visit of the Germany-based woman.
Edo has been buried in Italy.
But the Italian police, it was learnt, have yet to unravel the mystery surrounding the sudden death of the young man.
