An unidentified hit-andrun driver, suspected to be drunk, on Sunday, knocked down and killed a female lunatic, who attempted to cross the road along Airport Road in Effurun, Uvwie Local Government Area of Delta State.

According to an eye witness, Mr. Ejiro Amata, the mentally deranged woman was knocked down by the alleged drunk driver, who was on a high speed and driving recklessly, at about 3pm.

Afraid that he could be lynched by an angry mob that immediately gathered, the suspected drunk driver manoeuvred his vehicle and escaped from the scene of the accident, leaving the hapless woman to bleed to death on the spot.

Amata said, “From the way the killer-driver hit the mentally deranged woman and the manner in which he escaped from the scene after the accident, without having any human feeling for the victim, it was clear that the driver was drunk.

“In the first place, it was his reckless manner of driving that resulted in his knocking down the woman, because if he was not on a high speed, he would have seen the woman was about to cross the road and would have avoided hitting her. The driver was very reckless and inhuman.”

As at the time of filing this report, the lifeless body of the female lunatic, which had become swollen and emitting offensive odour polluting the environment, was still lying on the road.

The Warri Area Commander of the Nigeria Police, ACP Mohammed Shaba, confirmed the incident, saying, “I have confirmed from the Divisional Police Officer of Ugborikoko Police Station and he said they had written to Uvwie Local Government Council to evacuate the corpse.”

When contacted, the aides to the chairman of Uvwie Local Government Area, Hon (Mrs.) Stella Dabona, whose council is charged with the responsibility of evacuating such corpses, said she was in a meeting and could not talk to The Point on the incident. But the Supervisory Councilor for the local government, Hon. Collins Ighrakpata, in a telephone conversation, confirmed the report of the incident, stating that the relevant council officials had been hamstrung by bureaucratic bottlenecks, which had caused the delay in the evacuation of the corpse.

Ighrakpata said, “I became aware of the corpse since yesterday. The matter was reported to me, but bureaucracy such as police statements and magistrate’s signature, which must be gotten before you can evacuate a corpse have been responsible for the delay in evacuating the corpse.

“There are officers on ground waiting to evacuate the corpse once we are able to get the endorsement of the magistrate to do that.”
