The Federal Ministry of Housing and Urban Development is seeking increased budgetary resources to build affordable housing and address Nigeria’s housing deficit.1
The Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Musa Dangiwa, made the appeal during the 2025 budget defence session before the Senate Committee on Lands, Housing and Urban Development chaired by Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, and the House of Representatives Committee on Housing and Habitat, chaired by Abdulmumin Jibrin.
Dangiwa was accompanied by the Minister of State for Housing, Yusuf Abdullahi Ata, and other senior officials of the ministry announced the 2023/2024 budget and outlined the ministry’s priorities for 2025.
“The budget increase is urgently needed to support the President’s mandate for affordable housing and elimination of the housing deficit,” Dangiwa explained.
The minister stressed the need to complete ongoing housing projects, slum redevelopment and urban renewal programmes across the country.
He also outlined plans to build 20,000 houses under the Renewed Hope Housing Scheme and complete the National Housing Project in over 20 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
Dangiwa identified seven key areas where increased funding was needed to support government’s transformational agenda for recovery and growth:
Completion of ongoing housing projects, slum upgrading and urban redevelopment programmes, development of the national housing project, initiatives for affordable housing, development of housing infrastructure, research and development in the housing sector, and development of policy and regulatory frameworks.
“These areas are crucial for the housing sector to meet the needs of Nigerians and contribute to economic stability,” Dangiwa noted.
The Senate and House of committees commended the Ministry’s efforts in reforming the housing sector and pledged their cooperation.
“We support this vision and are committed to ensuring that the Ministry meets its requirements and obligations,” the committees assured.
The Federal Ministry of Housing and Urban Development reiterated its commitment to addressing the challenges of Nigeria’s housing sector and implementing policies that will foster economic growth and recovery.
