Housewife bags six months imprisonment for stealing provisions

A 37-year-old housewife, Monsurat Temitope, has been sentenced to six months imprisonment for allegedly stealing some provisions.

The Police in Osun State arrested Monsurat for stealing from Tawakalitu Owoseni’s shop in Osogbo.

She was prosecuted at a Chief Magistrate’s Court with some of the items that she reportedly stole as exhibits.

The stolen items included rolls of cowbell, rolls of Bournvita, rolls of Milo, 10 pieces of Close-up tooth paste, 6 tins of Three Crown milk, packets of Maggi and bars of Canoe soap.

According to the police prosecutor, ASP Abiodun Fagboyinbo, the offence was committed on November 5, 2022 at about 11:10am at Ringroad area, Osogbo.

Fagboyinbo said that the items that were stolen from Owoseni’s shop were worth N84, 310.

The charge brought against the suspect read that “You, Monsurat Temitope, on the 5th day of November, 2022, at about 11:10am at Ringroad area, Osogbo, did steal the following: three and half rolls of Cowbell, three and half rolls of Bournvita, four and half rolls of Milo, 10 pieces of roll on, six tins of Three Crown milk, 10 packets of Knorr maggi, two rolls of Bournvita and five sachets of Canoe soap, all valued at N84,310, property of one Tawakalitu Owoseni.

The suspect was said to have committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 390(9) of the Criminal Code, Cap 34, Volume II Laws of Osun State of Nigeria, 2002.

Monsurat pleaded guilty to the allegation.

The prosecutor, while giving the facts of the case, said that some of the stolen items were recovered and presented to the court.

Chief Magistrate Olusola Aluko found the defendant guilty as charged and convicted her accordingly.

Defence counsel, Tunbosun Oladipupo, urged the court to temper justice with mercy in sentencing the convict, saying that she had learnt her lessons.

Aluko sentenced her to six months jail term with an option of N50, 000 fines.
