The Nigeria Labour Congress has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic helicopter crash involving Eastwind Aviation on October 24, 2024.

The crash claimed the lives of eight Nigerian workers en route to the FPSO NUIM ANTAN oil facility off the coast of Calabar from Port Harcourt.

In a statement released on Saturday, NLC President Joe Ajaero conveyed the Congress’s condolences and emphasized the enormous sacrifices Nigerian workers make daily.

“As these workers ventured forth in service to our nation, they encountered fate’s cruel blow, reminding us once again of the sacrifices workers make to build a Nigeria that serves all,” Ajaero stated.

Ajaero lamented the tragic loss, underscoring the difficult conditions under which many workers operate, particularly in high-risk sectors.

He called for urgent measures to prioritize worker safety and ensure that no worker faces the risk of injury or death simply by doing their job.

“No worker should face death or injury as a consequence of simply doing their job. We urge the Government and relevant authorities to double their efforts to guarantee that workplaces and transportation routes to and from work are made safe,” Ajaero said.

The NLC president expressed concern over lax safety enforcement in critical sectors like offshore oil and gas, where the risks are exceptionally high.

He emphasized the importance of employers and regulators adhering strictly to regulations and implementing thorough safety measures to ensure the protection of workers’ lives.

Describing the crash as an “incident,” Ajaero emphasized the importance of dependable flight gear, effective communication systems, and strong search-and-rescue efforts.

He emphasized the need for aviation and oil and gas regulators to promptly establish strict safety measures to avoid more tragedies.

The NLC also called for a comprehensive inquiry into the accident.
