YET-TO-BE-IDENTIFIED gunmen, on Monday night, shot two soldiers and one civilian dead at a checkpoint in Ebonyi State.

The incident was said to have occurred at about 8.45pm at the Timber Junction axis, in Afikpo North Local Government Area of the state.

Some others were also said to have been injured in the attack and had been taken to an undisclosed hospital for medical attention.

The bodies of the slain soldiers and civilian were deposited in the morgue, it was learnt.

The gunmen, who were reportedly in a white bus were stopped at the checkpoint by the military men, but opened fire instead, killing the victims, while other soldiers ran into the bush.

“Everyone around here is afraid now. It seems these people do not want to see any security agent on the road again. They were stopped at the checkpoint when they opened fire. They killed three people, including two military officers, a man and a woman,” a source said.

The Military and Police authorities have yet to issue an official statement on the incident as of the time of filing this report, though a reliable security source confirmed it.
