Gunmen have reportedly attacked the Awgu Divisional Police Headquarters in Enugu State, killing a police constable identified as Akpa Emmanuel.

“The assailants also vandalised facilities at the station and made away with weapons, including an AK-47 rifle and two riot guns,” a source said.

According to sources, the attack occurred in the early hours of Monday, March 24, 2025.

Although details remain unclear, tension has gripped Awgu town, with heavy security presence as spy agents and other operatives have taken over the area.

In response, the new Commissioner of Police in Enugu, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, has deployed the Deputy Commissioner of Operations, Special Forces, the Police Mobile Force, the Counter-Terrorism Unit, and other tactical teams to strengthen security at the division.

The attack comes just weeks after a new Divisional Police Officer was posted to the station.

In a related incident, gunmen also attacked the Inyi Divisional Police Headquarters in Oji-River Local Government Area around 2:00 a.m. on the same day.

In the Inyi attack, no casualties or damage were reported as security agents successfully repelled the assault.
