Goods worth millions of naira destroyed as fire razes Anambra market

Traders at Ahia-Mgbede, located opposite Motor Spare Parts Market, in Uruagu Nnewi, Nnewi North Local Government Area of Anambra State have lost multi-million naira worth of goods to a midnight fire that ravaged the a larger section of the market.

Residents who witnessed the fire incident said it started at about 2:00am on Tuesday when people had already gone to bed.

One of them said, “The market is located within residential area and the moment it started, we started raising the alarm and calling some of the shop owners.”

A video of the inferno that surfaced online showed one of the affected traders lamenting absence of firefighters in the state, saying the goods and property would have been salvaged if firefighters arrived the scene on time.

Meanwhile, the Anambra State Fire Service has debunked insinuation that there is no fire fighters in the town, saying it officials battled the blaze and contained it.

A statement on Tuesday by Media and Publicity Unit of Anambra State Fire Service, said the cause of the fire disaster was unknown, adding that no life was lost.

It said firemen from two towns attended to the hugely escalating fire outbreak at the popular market, adding that the Service received the distress call at 02:15am of Tuesday, 14th January, 2025.

Immediately, the unit noted that crews of firemen and firefighting equipment from Nnewi Fire Station and Ogidi Fire Station were deployed to the scene.

“The Firemen fought tirelessly and contained the fire outbreak.

“The contained fire outbreak later this morning re-ignited and our Firemen are currently still at the scene making huge efforts to put it to a stop.

“The cause of the fire outbreak is still unknown as at the time of filing this report, and there was no casualty recorded.

“The general public is hereby encouraged to go about their normal businesses as the situation is progressively under control by the Anambra State Fire Service.

“Please, always be conscious of fire, avoid anything that can cause fire outbreak. Fire is dangerous, it kills but, we can prevent it.

“Always remember to call the Fire Service in time, for them to respond on time. When you call late, there’s no miracle that can make them respond earlier. Think safety first,” the statement read.

Traders who were affected in the tragedy lamented their losses.
