Fuel-laden tanker explodes in Ondo

A tanker loaded with fuel exploded in Ore, the headquarters of Odigbo Local Government Area of Ondo State on Saturday.

The incident occurred at about 6:30 pm on Saturday in the Soka area of the town.

According to an eyewitness account, the tanker was said to have veered off the road and fell into a nearby ditch.

The tanker immediately caught fire, and heavy smoke engulfed the whole area, leading to a reduction in visibility and heavy traffic.

The Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Commission in Ondo State, Samuel Ibitoye, confirmed the incident.

Ibitoye noted that no fatality has been recorded as a result of the inferno.

Meanwhile, three police officers and one suspect have died in an auto crash in the same community.

The incident took place on Thursday owing to a trailer driver who lost control due to overspeeding.

He was said to have crossed the median and rammed into the police van carrying the officers and the suspect.

Eyewitnesses said four police officers, from the Monitoring Unit of the Ondo State Police Command, had travelled from Akure, the state capital, to make an arrest in Ore.

But there was a surviving officer who sustained injuries and was later rushed to a hospital for treatment.

The bodies of the deceased have been deposited in a mortuary in Ore.

While confirming the accident, the Public Relations Officer of Ondo State Police Command, Funmilayo Odunlami-Omisanya, described it as unfortunate and expressed condolences to the families of the deceased officers.

Odunlami-Omisanya said an investigation has been launched into the matter.
