FIRS reaffirms Nigeria’s commitment to regional tax cooperation

The Executive Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service, Zaach Adedeji, has reiterated Nigeria’s strong commitment to regional tax cooperation and institutional sustainability.

He said this during the West Africa Tax Administration Forum Country Correspondents Conference and 20th WATAF Council Meeting held in Abuja.

Addressing participants at the event, the chairman emphasized the essential role of effective communication in the tax administration.

He said, “As a country correspondents and heads of corporate communications, you are the leading ambassador of our tax organizations, responsible for shaping stories, clarifying policies and promoting voluntary compliance.”

The event served as a venue for talks on institutional sustainability, an evaluation of the WATAF progress report, and an administrative summary of the WATAF Secretariat’s activities.

The FIRS Chairman emphasized Nigeria’s long-standing involvement in global tax collaboration, pointing out that the nation has significantly contributed to the growth of WATAF through technical support and capacity-building initiatives for member countries.

“Our country has always been at the forefront of promoting regional cooperation in tax administration, recognizing the importance of collaboration in addressing common challenges,” he said.

Reaffirming the FIRS’ dedication to tax policy development, he stated, “The FIRS remains committed to supporting initiatives that drive tax policy development and capacity-building, not just in Nigeria but across the West African region.

“We recognize the importance of domestic resource mobilization in achieving economic development and growth.

“Actively engage in discussions, leverage this gathering to build stronger professional networks, and commit to implementing the knowledge gained for the betterment of our tax systems.”

The conference highlights Nigeria’s persistent commitments to enhancing regional tax management and establishing a lasting tax structure to support economic development.
