The Federal Government of Nigeria has inaugurated 50 newly appointed Tax Appeal Commissioners in a major step to support economic reforms and revenue generation.
The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, presided over the ceremony, which was held at the Ministry of Finance Auditorium in Abuja.
Edun emphasized the pivotal role of the Tax Appeal Commissioners in supporting Nigeria`s economic reforms and enhancing revenue generation.
He highlighted the importance of the Tax Appeal Tribunal (TAT) in ensuring fair and efficient adjudication of tax disputes, which is essential for attracting investment and fostering a business-friendly environment.
“Reducing tax evasion is vital for maintaining trust in Nigeria’s tax system and funding national development,” Edun stated.
“While tax avoidance remains legal, tax evasion must be curtailed to ensure the integrity of Nigeria’s tax system.”
The Minister of State Finance, Doris Uzoka-Anite also spoke to the newly appointed commissioners, emphasizing the tribunal’s function in reconciling the government’s goal of revenue generation with the safeguarding of taxpayers’ rights.
She remarked, “The Tribunal plays a crucial role in the tax system, harmonizing the government’s goal of revenue collection with the protection of taxpayers’ rights.”
In response, the Tax Appeal Tribunal Commissioner/Chairman, Aderibigbe Adedeji, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve and assured that members would leverage their extensive experience in fulfilling their duties.
He thanked President Bola Tinubu for entrusting them with this responsibility.
This inauguration is part of the Federal Government`s broader tax reforms aimed at increasing revenue for critical sectors, including infrastructure, healthcare, and education.
Conducted under the authority of the Federal Inland Revenue Service Establishment Act 2007, the event reinforces the government`s commitment to strengthening institutions vital for Nigeria`s economic transformation.
With the induction of these Tax Appeal Commissioners, Nigeria is poised to advance towards a more robust and efficient tax system, paving the way for increased revenue generation and sustainable economic growth.
