Top juju musician, Yomi Peters, has revealed what transpired between him and the late legendary musician, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, the last time they met.
According to Peters, who is the creator of juju shuffle and co-creator of Shina Peters’ afro juju, he and Obesere had gone to visit Fela at his Afrika Shrine and they got talking about music, marijuana and all that.
And when he disclosed that he doesn’t smoke marijuana, yet he sings and plays instruments, Fela was sceptical.
Fela then told his boys to bring a guitar so Peters could prove he could play. Happily, Peters played the guitar perfectly and Fela then tested him further by requesting him to play the keyboard.
When he did as well dexterously, and then requested himself for a talking drum so he could display his skill on it, too, Fela said, “I believe you can play it too, stupid boy.”
But the maverick musician and leader, Fela, still had the last word. He described music as a profession patronised by smokers, fornicators, drinkers, adding that when they came to see a musician perform, it’s better if that musician also indulged in all those things as well so that there would be a kindred spirit.
