The pioneer Vice-Chancellor of Tai Solarin University of Education , Ogun State, Prof. Kayode Oyesiku, has advised the three tiers of government to complete roads under construction on schedule to minimise road
crashes.
He gave the advice while speaking on the sidelines of the 3rd Annual Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps Conference held in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
According to him, some road crashes were caused by abandoned road projects or those that have taken long before completion.
Oyesiku cited the Lagos/Ibadan Expressway as a typical example of a major highway that with ongoing reconstruction that had lasted long, saying this had taken more than eight years and was still
ongoing.
Lamenting that the crashes on the road had claimed several lives,
Oyesiku pleaded with the government to always fund such projects to ensure that they were completed within the stipulated period agreed with the
contractor.
The don also advised the Federal Government to encourage rail transportation to reduce pressures on the roads and make them
durable.
He said that people would be able to transport their heavy goods through the rail, thereby reducing the number of trucks that would be plying the highways.
Earlier, the TRACE Corps Commander, Mr Seni Ogunyemi, said there was the need to train and retrain road management personnel to enhance their efficiency and effectiveness.
Ogunyemi said this was important as the state was introducing new infrastructure around its roads.
