Gbemiro Tokunbo, popularly known as GT Da Guitarman, has opened up on how he was frustrated out of music.
At a time, GT was highly rated and dubbed the future of Nigerian music. He got signed on by Storm Records, one of the biggest Nigerian record labels, before it was rested.
Later, things became bad for him. He left Storm Records, and became lost in the music industry.
In a conversation with The Point, he said there was no time he lost confidence in or unsure of his ability.
He stated, “I was just frustrated with the whole system. When I even decided to push my company, Ember Entertainment, getting investment was a big deal. Some people I approached only wanted me to sign slave contracts and I was not ready for that.
“At that time of my life, I knew I could not do certain things anymore. I said to myself that it would be better for me to try other things.”
After leaving music, he delved into business. He tried his hands on selling cars at some point, and also did supplies, among other things.
He explained further, “Yes, I took a break and a very long one at that. I delved into other things apart from music. It was not even music that paid for my wedding last year.
“There was a time I was handling the billboard of a very popular church, and I made a lot of money. I did supplies and I sold cars. You know when it comes to business, it is mostly about what brings in money.
“I was quite good at the things I tried, but the truth is that somehow, music kept calling me. In the last three months, music has been the sole source of my revenue. I just got back from Benin last week, I have a wedding this Saturday and I have changed management as well. I am very happy I would be releasing a track, ‘Wire the Money,’ soon.”
One thing fatherhood has changed about him is getting home early. Since having his daughter, he tries not to stay out late anymore, because he likes to be there whenever she is about to sleep. He said he had remained so attached to her and recently told his wife that he could die for their baby girl.
For the singer too, when his wife got pregnant, it never crossed his mind that the child must be a boy.
He noted, “For me, whatever comes is God’s gift. When my wife and I were discussing, she asked: ‘how about if we give birth to girls alone?’ I told her it would be fantastic.
“If I give birth to a daughter, who is as intelligent as Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, I would not want a boy, who would become notorious as Lawrence Anini.”
