Muslims in Ekiti State have forwarded a request ahead of next year’s governorship election in the state, asking that the position of Deputy Governor should be reserved for them.

The Grand Imam of the League of Imams and Alfas in the South West, Edo and Delta states, Sheikh Jamiu Kewulere, who is also the Chief Imam of Ekiti State, made the demand on behalf of the Muslims in the state at a special jumat prayer marking the third year anniversary of Governor Ayodele Fayose in office.

The special prayer was attended by the governor, his deputy, Prof. Kolapo Olusola; Chief of Staff, Chief Dipo Anisulowo; Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Idowu Adelusi; and heads of security agencies in Ekiti.

Sheikh Kewulere said, “Where you go, we will follow you. We have capable hands that can deliver and be committed. Since you have put forward your deputy, who is a Christian, we want his deputy to be
a Muslim.

“Over the years, Muslims had been relegated to the background in the scheme of things but under Governor Fayose, things have improved for us. Same way, we want the governor to consider us for key positions, especially that of deputy governor.”

Saying that Fayose would be remembered for the goods he did for Ekiti, the cleric urged him to exercise restraint in the face of provocation.

“A good office like yours will attract criticisms and opposition because it is an exalted position. You need to show restraint and remain focused,” he enjoined.

Responding, Fayose, while promising to consider the requests of the Muslim community, said he would seek God’s guidance on the issue.

He also thanked the people for their show of love and prayers since he assumed office on October 16, 2014.

The governor promised to work till the last day in office to ensure completion of outstanding projects, and to pay salary arrears of
workers.
