The Commissioner of Police in Ebonyi State, Garba Aliyu, has ordered a manhunt for fleeing gunmen who attacked the Unwana Police Divisional headquarters in Afikpo North Local Government Area of the state on Sunday.

The CP gave the order during his visit to the scene of the attack.

During the attack, a policeman was shot dead while two others sustained various degrees of injury.

The CP in a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Loveth Odah, said that about 35 hoodlums swooped on the station.

The statement read that one of the hoodlums was gunned down in a gun duel with the police.

Two AK 47 rifles were recovered from the hoodlums who bolted away with bullet wounds.

The statement read that one of the recovered AK 47 rifles was stolen during a recent attack on Ohaukwu Divisional Police Station while the hoodlum who was gunned down had been on the police wanted list for sundry attacks on police formations in the state.

It stated, “At 03:00hours of today, 24th October 2021, some yet-to-be identified gunmen suspected to be members of the proscribed IPOB/ESN, numbering about 35, attacked the Unwana Divisional Headquarters in Afikpo North Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, shooting sporadically at the policemen on duty, who immediately repelled the attackers in the gun battle that ensued.

“One of the hoodlums was killed and two AK47 rifles and other incriminating items were recovered while others escaped with bullet wound injuries. Regrettably, one Police Inspector attached to the Division was fatally wounded. The Police facility and operational vehicles are intact.

“Meanwhile, the CP has ordered a manhunt on the fleeing hoodlums.
The CP appeals to law-abiding citizens of the state to volunteer useful information that could assist the Command in the investigation.”
