Tragedy struck in Osogbo, capital of Osun State when a driver running away from officials of Federal Road Safety Corps, crushed a pedestrian to death.

The driver, identified as Wahab Sodiq, was driving through Owode road, Osogbo on January 3, 2025, when some FRSC officials flagged him down and questioned him on particulars of his vehicle.

Upon discovery that Sodiq’s car documents were not complete, the officials reportedly asked him to drive to their office in the Ogo-Oluwa area of the capital city.

Witnesses explained that as Sodiq drove towards the FRSC office, officials who boarded the agency’s vehicle were driving behind him.

They said Sodiq was almost entering the premises of the corps when he suddenly veered. The officials were said to have started chasing him until Sodiq crushed a male pedestrian to death at Owode road.

Sodiq was then arrested and handed over to the Criminal Investigation Department of the state police command.

He was dragged before an Osogbo Magistrate’s Court and slammed with a count of murder.

The count read, “That you Wahab Sodiq, on the 3rd day of January 2025, at about 9:30am at Owode Road, Osogbo, Osun State, in the Osogbo Magisterial District, did unlawfully kill one Olagbaju Olatunde, and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 319 of the Criminal Code Cap 34 Vol. II laws of Osun state of Nigeria 2002.”

The plea of the 32-year-old defendant was not taken because the magistrate lacks jurisdiction.

Presiding Magistrate, M. A. Olatunji, ordered that Sodiq be remanded in Ilesa Correctional Centre and adjourned the matter till January 30, 2025 for mention.
