Dino Melaye, a lawmaker who once represented Kogi West Senatorial district and the incumbent spokesperson for the 2023 People’s Democratic Party Presidential Campaign Council, has been declared the winner of the party’s gubernatorial primary in Kogi State.

Melaye scored 313 votes against Idoko Ilonah’s 124 votes. Awoniyi Sunday polled 77 votes while Musa Wada polled 56 votes.

A total of 27 individuals had picked up Expression of Interest forms to contest in the primary elections.

The primaries featured several notable personalities aside from the former senator, including former deputy governor of the state Yomi Awoniyi, and former senator Attai Aidoko. Others who also contested included Kebiru Usman, Abdullahi Haruna, Zakaria Alfa, Musa Wada, Bolu Femi, and Idoko Idah.

There were reports that former Vice President and PDP presidential candidate in the last election, Atiku Abubakar, was backing Melaye for the governorship position, while the governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, was supporting Idah.
