Court remands teenager, three others over alleged possession of firearms

A teenager, Oluwaseyi Gbadebo, has been remanded in llesa Correctional Centre for allegedly having guns in his possession.

Gbadebo was arraigned alongside three others, namely Nurudeen Oluronbi, 41; Mojeed Adeleke, 38; and Samad Aseru, 20; before a Chief Magistrate’s Court in Osogbo on a three-count charge bordering on conspiracy and unlawful possession of firearms.

The four defendants and others at large, were accused of unlawful possession of one Pump-Action gun numbered 476, one single barrel gun and two live cartridges among other dangerous weapons.

The accused persons were said to have committed the offence at about 3pm on January 13, at Number 4, Akede Street, Oke-Baale Area, Osogbo.
Police prosecutor, Inspector Adeoye Kayode, stated that the defendants also possessed weeds suspected to be Indian hemp.
He said that Oluronbi escaped from police custody after arrest but was later re-arrested.

The charge against them read that Gbadebo, “and others now at large, on January 13, 2022, at about 3pm at Number 4, Akede Street, Oke-Baale Area, Osogbo, did conspire among yourselves to commit felony to wit unlawful possession of dangerous weapons and weeds suspected to be Indian hemp.
“You unlawfully had in your possession one UTC axe, one cutlass and 10 wraps of weeds suspected to be Indian hemp otherwise known as cannabis sativa.

“Oluronbi Nurudeen, on the same date and time did escape from lawful custody of the police FIB-Intelligence Response Team, Osun State Annex, Osogbo.”

The offences contravened sections 6(b), 3(1) and 27(1) (b)(ii) of the Robbery and Firearms (Special Provision) Act, Cap RIl, Volume 14, Laws of the Federation, 2014.

The escape from custody is said to be contrary to and punishable under Section 135 of the Criminal Code, Cap 34, Volume II Laws of Osun State, 2002.

The plea of the defendants was not taken as the court stated that it lacked jurisdiction to try the alleged offence.

The presiding Chief Magistrate, A. A. Adebayo, ordered that the defendants should be remanded in Ilesa Correctional Centre.
The case was adjourned till March 28 for mention.
