Court remands suspect in prison for allegedly defrauding car buyer

A 38-year-old man, Moroof Waheed Adebayo, has been remanded in Ilesa Correctional Centre for allegedly defrauding a man of the sum of N800,000,00.

Adebayo was said to have obtained the sum from one Addulrasaq Yakub with a promise of selling a car to him but failed and converted the N800,000,00 to his own use.

The Police dragged the defendant before an Osogbo Magistrate’s Court on tow count-charge of fraud and theft allegedly committed sometimes in December, 2021 in Osogbo.

The charge read, “That you Moroof Waheed, sometimes in December, 2021 in Osogbo did with intent to defraud, obtain the sum of Eight Hundred Thousand Naira (N 800,000.00) from one Abdulrasaq Yakub, under false pretence with intent of selling a vehicle to him a pretence knowing fully to you to be false and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under section 419 of the Criminal Code Cap. 34 Vol. II Laws of Osun State of Nigeria, 2002.

“That you (defendant) on the same date, place, month and year did fraudulently steal and convert to your own use the sum of Eight Hundred Thousand Naira (N 800,000.00) property of Addulrasaq Yakub and thereby committed an offence contrary to section 383(1) and punishable under section 390(9) of the Criminal Code Cap 34 Vol. II Laws of Osun State of Nigeria, 2002.”

The accused person didn’t have legal representation. He, however, pleaded not guilty to the allegations.

The police prosecutor urged the court to remand Adebayo in lawful custody to be able to face his trial.

Magistrate О. А. Daramola ordered that the defendant be remanded in Ilesa Correctional Centre and adjourned till July 20 for ruling on bail.
