A Magistrate Court sitting in Ogba, Lagos, has remanded a 35-year-old man, Maurice Peter, in a correctional centre for raping an 11-year-old girl inside a church in Lagos.
The man was said to have lured the victim with money into a church at Tijani Qudus Street, Ijegun area of Lagos, before he forcefully had carnal knowledge of her.
He was later caught in the act and handed over to the police at Ikotun Division, following the alarm raised by the victim, which attracted people within the premises.
Meanwhile, a police source said Maurice took the victim to the Church when nobody was there, touched her breasts “and eventually penetrated her before he was caught.”
The victim confirmed that the accused lured her into the church to have sex with her, but the suspect, while defending his action, said he had sex with the minor after seeking her consent.
The suspect was remanded in the correctional centre without an option of bail, following a motion by the prosecutor, Supol Ezekiel.
The Presiding Magistrate, Mrs. B.O. Osunsanmi, granted the request, ordered Maurice to be remanded and directed the prosecutor to duplicate the file and send to the DPP for advice.
The matter was adjourned till 10th September 2020, for more reports while the man will remain in custody till then.
